Air travel in Brazil triples

The need to build and upgrade airports in Brazil ahead of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics being hosted in the country was made more evident this week.

On Wednesday, Brazil’s aviation authority ANAC said demand for flights in Brazil has risen 194 percent in the past 10 years. Last year, air travel demand rose 16 percent over the previous year with 107.8 million passengers on flights originating in Brazil.

Airport upgrades are expected to cost US$3.7 billion. The government has issued public tenders for several airport improvements, with tender auctions to be held next month.
