Passenger surge calls for more planes

Avianca and AeroGal airlines collectively flew 11 percent more international travellers in 2011 compared to the previous year.

The Colombian and Ecuadorian carriers, which operate under AviancaTaca, confirmed an  order of 51 new Airbus A320 jets this week, the largest single order yet in Latin America according to French manufacturer Airbus.

Last year the carriers flew 20.7 million passengers. On routes within Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, the airlines carried more than 11 million passengers, an increase of 23.4 percent over 2010.
